2013 Spring Break Programs

Shakespeare for Kids: K-2nd grade
12:30 - 3:30,  $150

Students will experience an introduction to the timeless stories of Shakespeare's works, his poetry, and the language of his plays. Engage in games that play with the vocabulary, rhyme, meter, and word music of Shakespearean verse to explore patterns, beats, and expression. We'll get to know famous characters from the plays, learn about their likes and dislikes, and work to understand what makes them act the way they do. Camp days will include theater games, fun acting exercises, and children's games from Elizabethan times, too.

Instructor: Brooke LeWarne earned her BA in Theatre Arts from the University of Iowa, with a focus on acting and arts management. She adores the work of Shakespeare and has studied his work for years, both at the UI and in New York. Brooke is currently an educator at Northwest Junior High and a House Manager for the University of Iowa's Theatre season.

Drum Beats

8:30 AM - 11:30 AM: K-2nd Grade, $150

Drums have an irresistible pull for learners of all ages - making music on a drum is fun and deeply satisfying! Group drumming not only introduces students to musical technique and self-expression, but nourishes them mind, body, and spirit. As children work with rhythms, they are accessing their minds, expressing their emotions without saying a word, creating a deep sense of self-awareness, and building a sense of connectedness with others. Drum circles promote cooperative work, team spirit, and individual contribution to the whole. With an emphasis on age-appropriate skills and music, learners at each level will experience an introduction to drumming techniques. Throughout the week, we'll explore drumming and rock-n-roll, hip-hop, pop, blues, swing, and jazz music. We'll finish our musical adventure with a performance for friends and family on the final day of camp.

Instructor: Abby Haywood holds an Iowa teaching license and a board certification in Music Therapy. She has six years of music teaching experience.  Abby has conducted drum workshops and after school drum ensembles for elementary and high school students.
