A few quick Spring reminders.
1) Willowwind's Annual Meeting - TONIGHT Thursday, April 25th 5:30 - 6:30
Come hear from Carly and the Board of Trustees as they discuss Willowwind's yearly progress.
2) Snow Day Make Up - TOMORROW Friday, April 26th
Due to our Snowy February and March we will be in school on Snow Day to make up one of our Snow Days. BASP will also be available and the Office will be open.
3) Library Field Trip - TOMORROW Friday, April 26th
We will be making our way downtown tomorrow for our monthly field trip and hopefully time on the play structure. Please be sure your child brings their library card.
4) Movement's Gardening Supplies Needed
The Willowwind students are eager to jump in the garden as the weather begins to warm. On Tuesdays and Thursdays students are encouraged to dress in their gardening clothes as they work in the dirt, cultivate the soil, and plant flowers, vegetables, and herbs. In addition, your child can bring gardening gloves and a gardening kneepad if they'd like. This is optional, but if your child chooses to do so, please be sure their supplies from home include their name or initials. This will ensure your supplies will return home at the end of their gardening unit.

American Legion Pride
On Monday, the Kindergarten class had the honor of presenting our Fabric projects to the American Legion. It was a true pleasure watching our students speak in front of another audience. The American Legion ladies were thrilled to listen to our readers and the Kinders were excited to share their love of school with new friends in our community.

Reading about our Fabric Collages

A group photo with the Legion's Regional representative. She has traveled 21,000 miles!

We love the USA!

Thank you American Legion! They gave us fun American flags and bubbles! These gifts lead to wonderful conversations about the symbolic stars and stripes and a TON of bubble fun at Afternoon Recess.

GD Space Library
Willowwind is excited to introduce our re-vamped Library Space!
Thank YOU to our recent Book Fair sales we were able to add in hundreds of new books to our library book shelves.
On a recent Work Day Willowwind parents and students organized the books into subject areas.
Students decorated personalized book place holders (aka wood paint stir sticks).
The Burrowing Owls have established a check in & out routine and use our MacBooks and Google Spreadsheets to inventory the books that come and go.
Now, your child is able to check out and enjoy the books that call our GD Space home.
Before and after school your child is able to check out a book from the GD Space's Library. To help keep track of books, Willowwind friends have decided that the books from these shelves need to stay at school. Please encourage your child to check out books (one at a time) from our library shelves. In doing so, I ask your child to keep this book in their cubby space where it will await our daily Partner Reading and Quiet Reading times. if your child has check out questions encourage them to ask the Owls at the check-out station.
Happy book hunting!

Quiet Observations 2:
One of the joys of being a Kindergarten teacher are the moments when I can sit back and just watch and listen to the excited chatter that occurs throughout the school year. I love to watch these tender moments and write them down to capture and remember before the flit on by.
It is my pleasure to share them with you. Welcome back to my favorite segment of Kindergarten blogging….Quiet Observations. Here I can share them with you - sometimes, they make take form in interactions between a group of students and sometimes they are the cutest quotes imaginable. This segment includes some sweet words from your children. I have been collecting quotes over the last few weeks for your enjoyment. Thank you for allowing me to share in their sweetness.
Snack Time Chatter:
It is always a ton of fun listening to free time conversations and to see how these conversations are inspired by lessons that have occurred throughout the week. Here are tidbits of conversations from snack time.
Student 1: Let's have a Spanish Song recital.
Student 2: Yeah! I'll sing the days of the week song! "Domingo, Lunes, Martes, Mericoles, Jueves, Viernes, Sabado,"
Student 3: Now let's sing the Colores song. Red is rojo. Green is verde. Blue, azul. Negro, black. Purple is marodo. Gray is gris. Brown, cafe.
Student 4: Fun! Now let's sing all the Music songs.
** Table continues to sing every Music song they have learned. They also continue to sing Racerunners' Music songs and other songs they know. **
Student 1: What would our names sound like if we took the vowels out? Like HNNH. Hnnnnnnh.
Student 2: M-R-K. Haha…Merk!
Student 3: T. Just T!
Student 4: Jnh. Juh-nuh!! What about the other tables?
Student 1: What are you doing?
Student 2: I'm reading the Word Wall.
Student 3: How?
Student 2: I like to go down the letters and read every word on the wall.
Student 1: Cool. A says Ainsley, Aubrey, Art, azul, a…
Student 1: I'm eating goldfish. I'm going to count them by 2s. 2, 4, 6, 8…
Student 2: I'll count my crackers by 5s.
Student 3: I only have 3 strawberries. I can count them by 1s. 1, 2, 3!
Student 1: Today is my 5 and 2/3 birthday. In preschool we learned that that means that is how many times the Earth has traveled around the sun.
Student 2: Oh yeah! When I turned 5 then the Earth traveled around 5 times.
Student 3: When I turn 7 then that means the Earth has gone around 7 times.
Student 1: Did you know, guys? I am VERY fond of reading.

Burrowing Owl Cafe - THIS Friday, April 12th
Please join us for the Burrowing Owl Café THIS Friday, April 12th from 7:45-8:30 a.m. The café includes breakfast food and drinks that are served at a nominal cost ($0.50 - $1.00) to all PreK through 6th grade Willowwind families.
The café is a one-time fund raising event for the Burrowing Owl class trip on May 20th. This year the students are traveling to the Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge located near Des Moines, Iowa. This day trip will be a wonderful culmination to their study of Iowa history and prairies. The students will gain first-hand knowledge about the time period when much of the Iowa landscape was open prairie.
Along with providing the funds for our trip, this is a great school-wide community building event, so bring the entire family and join us for an hour of great food and socializing! Thanks in advance for your support.

Reminders
Just a few quick reminders and announcements as we finally enter the beautiful season of Spring.
1) Student Work on Display @ ICPL
The next time you are in the Children's Library at the Iowa City Public Library please be sure to take a moment to check out the featured artists showcased on the library walls. The current featured artists just so happens to be our very own Willowwind students. Take a look at our students' beautiful artwork. What a fun opportunity to have their work on display within the community. Enjoy!
2) School Start Time - 8:15
Please remember that school starts at 8:15 each day. Please be sure your child is ready to start our morning no later than 8:15. The classroom opens up at 8:00 and BSP begins at 7:30 to help with busy morning routines.
3) Bunny Bags
Please be sure your child has their Bunny Bag at school each day. Bunny Bags are used daily during Partner Reading, Quiet Reading Time, and Spelling. It is an essential part of your child's school day.
4) Spring Weather Gear
Please help your child be prepared for the changing weather that occurs during Iowa's Spring season. We'll be outside enjoying the weather even with the cool mornings, warm afternoons, and soggy, muddy ground. Make sure your child is dressed appropriately each day. Even with the disappearing snow, THANK YOU for continuing to bring boots for your child. Boots are an essential part of our recess time as they keep our feet dry and our indoor shoes clean. Keep it up!
5) Parent Help Needed
As we transition into warmer weather, we've noticed that our ground requires some grass seed and attention. If you're still looking for volunteer opportunities before we tally final service hours on April 15th, please consider lending a hand and planting some grass on Willowwind's grounds. All materials will be provided. For more information, please email our Program Director, Katherine Anderson, at katherinea@willowwind.org.
