Quiet Observations

Quiet Observation 8:
Hablamos Espanol

The kiddos were working in Centers. Some were finishing Math workbook pages, some were building elaborate structures, some were sorting their 100th day collections (still a favorite activity on the 111th day of school), some were pretending with the basket of stuffed animals. After finishing a one-on-one reading assessment, I walked into hear a few fun sentences spoken in Spanish. The conversation went like this…
Friend #1: "Pero, Gato, vamos
Friend #2: "Si, si Oso vamos

Another day, students were sorting the Counting Bears by color they were counting each group by two, but rather than counting by 2s in English they were counting by 2s in Spanish! Our Morning Meeting counting by 2s in English AND in Spanish is certainly paying off!

I love listening to them sample their comfortability with a new language. The words they are learning are spoken so easily and freely. Numbers, colors, shapes, animals, days of the week, and months of the year are easily spoken about in Spanish. Not only does this free conversation enhance their Spanish speaking skills, but it also strengthens their knowledge in truly understanding those concept at hand. It is music to my ears!
